Three Fifths
Alcoholism and death; the two things that Johnny Silva is dealing with, as he's thrust into an unforeseen encounter with Nicolas Anderson one day in a small town liquor store in the foothills of central California. Johnny combats the past, as well as the present, while he spends time with Nicolas: an intense twenty-four hour time frame where Johnny sits front and center as he observes his two old nemeses; alcoholism and self destruction. He learns that Anderson was once an attorney, once a husband, and once a father, but all this drastically changed with the unlikely and accidental death of Anderson's daughter. Transporting a dead body hundreds of miles, the fear of law enforcement, and keeping his word take Johnny on a thought provoking ride throughout the California foothills, the central California coast, and finally, to a cemetery in Los Angeles where he struggles with his own truths and realities and the characters in his everyday life: an A.A. sponsor who owns a pet cemetery. A protective and sometimes violent multi-millionaire boss, who avenges a violent act once bestowed upon Johnny during his active alcoholic and drug induced days. A loving Indian girlfriend and soul mate, who realizes something is now askew in Johnny's life, a daughter who is a university student up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a supportive uncle who always saw the good things in Johnny. A series of letters, two written by Anderson, and one written by Johnny, tie things together with a common theme, as Johnny wants to do the right thing as he struggles with his own recovery and emotions, and being a father to a daughter.
